How much can I apply for?

PoDoCo foundation pool offers 6 to12 months research grants for the research period. The time unit of research grants is one month. In other words, the sum you apply for will depend on the work's duration, which is typically one year. A one-year research grant is EUR 28 000.

The researchg grant includes the statutory social contributions (approx. 15% of the total grant). In addition, up to EUR 4 000 of common expenses arising from travelling, materials, equipment, workroom rental, and such are considered to be included in the grant sum.

Grants awarded by the PoDoCo pool are subject to statutory insurance, in accordance with the Farmers' Social Insurance legislation. The insurance is not obligatory for the share of the grant assigned for research expenses. The grant recipients must contact the Farmers' Social Insurance Institution Mela to find out whether they need to take the insurance.

Grants awarded by PoDoCo program are tax-exempt up to the amount equivalent to the Finnish state grants for artists (2016 € 20.293,40).

The participating foundations decide by themselves the number of grants they will award. In addition, the participating foundations decide by themselves how much funding they will allocate to the PoDoCo pool annually.

How the grant application is evaluated and funding decisions informed?

PoDoCo Management Group with representatives appointed by each member foundation manages PoDoCo foundation pool. The pool takes care of expert review of applications and preparatory work and makes a suggestion for each application (reject/accept, including the name of Foundation). The foundations involved will make the actual grant decisions.

Successful applicants will be informed of receiving a grant immediately after the funding decisions are made. The names of the grant recipients will be published at PoDoCo website and according to the standard practices of the foundation which has awarded the grant.

The use of an awarded grant may be deferred by six months, if the project plan remains the same. Decisions concerning longer deferrals are made by the PoDoCo Management Board case by case.

The duration of PoDoCo period is 1-2 years and it consist of two phases: research period and targeted research period. PoDoCo program is funded by PoDoCo foundation pool and companies participating in the program. PoDoCo foundation pool offers research grants for the research period. After the research period the company hires the Post doc to deepen the research results and to create company specific insight for a period of time equivalent to the period of the grant period.

For a PoDoCo researcher the program offers a research period followed by a targeted research period lasting all together 1-2 years. The programme will assist postdocs by:

  • Offering a research grant for for academic research having strategic importance for Finnish companies
  • Offering an opportunity to work in industry and gain get industrial experience.

Who can participate?

All Young doctors who have recently completed or will soon complete their doctorate degree are welcome to join the PoDoCo Program

Interest towards challenges of the companies, business-oriented thinking and willingness to work in companies are prerequisites for the participation of post docs. The aim of the PoDoCo program is create a win – win situation where academic research is supporting the long term competitiveness and strategic renewal of Finnish companies and young doctors get industrial experience. Hence, research is conducted on areas of direct industrial relevance.

How to participate?

The application process is simple and it the process is described in figure below.





1) Find a company partner

  • Utilising PoDoCo Matchmaking Service
    Fill in PoDoCo post doc profile indicating your competences and research interests here.
    DIMECC makes continuous analysis by scanning the information and offers matching information and suggestions made based on PoDoCo profiles.
  • Utilising your own company contacts
2) Agree on collaboration
  • The commitment to the program is indicated by a letter of intent (LoI) which is signed by the company and the postdoc. With the letter of intent the company declares its interest towards the selected research topic and intent to hire the post doc for a period of time equivalent to the period of the grant applied. However, a Post doc is not legally committed to work for a company after the research period and the company is not legally committed to hire the Post doc. Instead, the letter of intent serves as a sincere aim for an employment relationship to take place after the grant period and a serious commitment by both parties to try to make it happen. LoI is attached to the grant application
3) Prepare a project proposal and apply a grant
  • Prepare together with the company a project plan (max 5 pages) describing the objectives of the project as well as an explanation of the main activities and expected results foreseen. It is important that the impact of the project for the company and the company's renewal is included in the project plan.
  • The postdoc applies a grant by filling in the electronic application form and uploading required attachments at PoDoCo website. The electronic application must be sent within the application period.
  • Detailed instruction and conditions for grant application and project proposal are described in part "Grants".

4) Wait for the evaluation results

  • PoDoCo Management Group with representatives appointed by each member foundation manages PoDoCo foundation pool. Mitä PoDoCo ohjelma tarjoaa yrityksille?

PoDoCo (Post Docs in Companies) ohjelman tavoitteena on edistää nuorten tohtorien siirtymistä elinkeinoelämän palvelukseen ja samalla parantaa Suomen elinkeinoelämän kykyä uudistua pitkäjänteisesti. Yrityksille PoDoCo ohjelma tarjoaa mahdollisuuden uusien strategisten avausten käynnistämiseen ja toteuttamiseen sekä nuorten tohtoreiden osaamisen ja tietotaidon hyödyntämiseen.

PoDoCo projektin kokonaispituus on 1-2 vuotta ja se jakautuu kahteen 6-12 kuukauden osaan. Aluksi on säätiörahoitteinen tutkimusvaihe ja sitä seuraa saman pituinen yrityksen rahoittama soveltava vaihe. Yritysten rahoittama soveltava vaihe toteutetaan normaalina työsuhteena tohtorin ja yrityksen välillä. Osapuolien ei tarvitse sitoutua toiseen vaiheeseen projektin käynnistyessä. Yhteisenä tahtotilana tulee kuitenkin olla pidempi yhteistyöprojekti.

PoDoCo ohjelma tarjoaa:

  • Tietoa tuoreista nuorista korkeasti koulutetuista ja lahjakkaista tohtoreista ja heidän erityisosaamisistaan
  • Mahdollisuuden tohtoreiden osaamisen hyödyntämiseen uusien strategisten avausten analysoinnissa ja toteutuksessa
  • Säätiöiden myöntämän tutkimusapurahan tohtorille projektin tutkimusvaiheen kustannusten kattamiseksi

Millaiset yritykset voivat osallistua?

PoDoCo ohjelmaan voi osallistua toimialasta ja yrityksen koosta riippumatta mikä tahansa suomalainen tai Suomessa liiketoimintaa harjoittava yritys.

Miten osallistua?

PoDoCo ohjelman seuraava hakukierros on 15.9.–3.11.2017. Osallistuaksenne hakukierrokselle teidän tulee:

1) Kuvat yrityksenne tutkimustarpeet täyttämällä yritysprofiili täällä

  • Yritysprofiilianne vasten etsimme 5-10 tarpeisiinne sopivaa tohtoriprofiilia PoDoCo tietokannasta, johon lähes 400 tohtoria on täyttänyt osaamisprofiilinsa

2) Valita profiilien joukosta tarpeisiinne sopiva tohtori

3) Sopia yhteistyöstä tohtorin kanssa ja allekirjoittakaa yhteistyöhön sitoutumista kuvaava LoI (Letter of Intent)

4) Valmistella yhdessä tohtorin kanssa lyhyt, maksimissaan 5-sivuinen tutkimussuunnitelma, jossa kuvataan ohjelman säätiörahoitteisen osuuden tavoitteet ja merkitys. Suunnitelmassa on tärkeää kuvata projektin vaikutukset yritykselle ja yrityksen uusiutumiselle.

5) Tohtori jättää apurahahakemuksen, jonka liitteenä on tutkimussuunnitelma ja LoI, sähköiseen apurahahakujärjestelmään www.podoco.fi sivustolla 3.11.2017 mennessä.

FAQ

Who can participate in the PoDoCo program?

PoDoCo program is aimed for all disciplines. PoDoCo program is intended to support strategic renewal of Finnish industry, and PoDoCo undertakings need to have connection to Finland.

All companies operating in Finland are welcome to join the PoDoCo Program.

All young doctors who have recently completed or will soon complete their doctorate degree and are interested in a career in industry are welcome to join the PoDoCo Program

  • The applicants' doctoral degree was completed no more than four years previously (excluding maternity leave, military service and Non-military service)
  • Doctoral candidates, who have not yet graduated but graduating during next 6-9 months may also apply for a grant. In such cases assurance from guiding professor must be enclosed with the application. The grant will not be paid out until after the doctoral degree is completed.

Can the collaboration company pay a salary to the postdoc during the grant period?

No, the grantee may not receive salary from the collaboration company during the grant period.

What should I do to receive the grant? Should I notify someone that I am going to start using the grant according to my plan in?

You should take a contact to the foundation awarded the grant to agree on the practicalities regarding the grant. The contact information can be found from the grant approval letter sent you via email.

Is it possible to be awarded a working grant concurrently with another working grant, salary, or unemployment allowance?

With a grant awarded for full-time work it is not possible to receive corresponding funding from another source.

How much work I am allowed to do during the grant period?

The working grant is intended for full-time work. You are allowed to work for no more than 25% of the total weekly working hours allocated for grant-funded work, that is ca. 1.25 days a week.

Do I have to pay tax for the grant?

A grant is, under certain prerequisites, exempt from tax up to the amount of the annual Finnish Government artists' grant. Please see Guidelines for grantees and www.vero.fi for more information.

Can awarded grant be deferred?

The use of an awarded grant may be deferred by six months, if the project plan remains the same. Notify the PoDoCo program and the foundation awarded the grant of a change in your circumstances by email.

Decisions concerning longer deferrals are made by the PoDoCo Management Board case by case.

How much I can apply for?

Please note that grants awarded by PoDoCo program are tax-exempt up to the amount equivalent to the Finnish state grants for artists (2016 € 20.293,40).Deduction of expenses directly related to the income can be claimed against the part of the income exceeding the tax-free limit by sending the required specification of expenses to the tax authorities.
